To get plasterboard onto a tight site cleanly, tell the branch about the access before the truck is loaded: street width, overhead lines, height limits, ground conditions and whether a crane or forklift is on site. Then decide where the stack will live, keep the carry path short and flat, and stage the order if the program runs long.
Plasterboard is heavy, long and fragile on its edges, and inner-city Brisbane sites rarely have generous access. A few minutes of planning when you order saves an hour of double handling on the day, and it saves the sheets that get chipped when a stack has to be moved twice.
Tell us about the site, not just the address
When you book a site delivery, flag anything that affects the truck: narrow streets, overhead lines, soft ground, height limits in basements, and whether there is a crane or forklift on site. Our drivers deliver to job sites every day and will plan the drop around your constraints.
The reason this matters more for plasterboard than for most materials is the sheet length. A 3600mm or 4200mm sheet cannot be turned in a tight space, cannot be carried up a switchback stair, and cannot be swung off a truck under a power line. A driver who arrives without knowing the constraint has to solve it on the spot, which usually means double handling, a longer carry, or the load going back to the yard.
The specifics worth mentioning when you order:
- Street and driveway width, and whether the truck can turn or has to reverse in.
- Overhead obstructions, power lines, trees and awnings, which rule out a crane lift.
- Height limits, particularly for basement car parks and under-building access.
- Ground conditions, since a loaded truck on soft fill or fresh landscaping is a problem for everyone.
- Site plant, whether a forklift, telehandler or crane is available and when.
- Access windows, including school zones, loading restrictions and body corporate rules on apartment sites.
- Site contact name and a number that will be answered on the day
- Longest sheet on the order, so we know the swing radius needed
- Where the truck will stand and where the stack will land
- Any plant on site and the window it is available
- Level the material goes to, and how it gets there
Think about the carry path
Sheets travel best flat and supported. Decide where the stack will live before the truck arrives: close to where the board goes up, off the weather, and clear of trades traffic. For multi-storey work, order lengths that fit the stair or lift path, or arrange mechanical handling in advance.
Walking the carry path before delivery day is worth the five minutes. The things that stop a sheet are rarely the ones you notice standing still: a doorway that is wide enough but has a return immediately behind it, a stair with a tight winder, a hallway with a light fitting at head height, a threshold with a step that makes a two-person carry awkward.
Where the stack lands matters just as much as how it gets there. Plasterboard should be stored flat on a level surface, on bearers if the floor is uneven, and never on edge for any length of time, because sheets stored on edge take a set and never sit truly flat afterwards. Keep it out of the weather and away from any area that will be washed down, since a wet sheet is a scrapped sheet.
Getting board to an upper level
Upper level deliveries are where planning pays for itself several times over. There are three usual approaches and they have to be settled before the order goes in, not on the day.
| Method | Needs | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Crane or hiab lift | Clear overhead, a landing zone, and a window on site | Power lines, trees, wind, and neighbouring property |
| Through an opening | A window or balcony opening left out, and edge protection | Sequencing, since the opening has to still be open on the day |
| Stair or lift carry | Sheet lengths that physically fit the path | Winders, lift dimensions, and the labour cost of the carry |
If the answer is a stair carry, the sheet length decision follows from it rather than from the wall height. It is often better to accept an extra joint and order a shorter sheet than to buy a length that has to be walked up in a way that damages the edges. Our reference on plasterboard thickness is worth a look here too, since a 13mm sheet at 3600mm is a genuinely heavy two-person lift.
Stage the order if the program is long
On bigger jobs it often pays to split the order into staged drops so board is not sitting exposed for weeks. Talk to the branch about aligning deliveries with your fixing program, and keep compounds and consumables on the same run to save freight.
Staging solves three problems at once. It keeps the site clear, which matters when other trades need the same floor space. It limits how much material is exposed to weather and damage at any one time. And it spreads the handling, so a crew is not moving a whole house worth of board on one afternoon.
The trade-off is coordination. Each drop needs its own access window and its own site contact, and a staged program only works if someone is tracking what has landed and what is still to come. On jobs where the program is likely to move, it is usually better to stage in two or three larger drops than in many small ones.
Booking a delivery across South East Queensland
We deliver from four branches at Morningside, Redlands, the Gold Coast and Caboolture, which means most South East Queensland sites are served from the yard closest to them. Our general coverage and lead times are set out in our post on plasterboard delivery in Brisbane and South East Queensland.
For a difficult site, the most useful thing you can do is call rather than email. Two minutes on the phone about the access usually settles what would otherwise be several messages, and it lets us match the right truck to the job before anything is loaded.
Need plasterboard, framing or insulation on site? Call the trade counter on (07) 3245 4488 or send an enquiry and the team will come back to you with stock and pricing.
Difficult site access on your next drop?
Tell Bayside Plasterboard about the street, the plant and the carry path when you order, and we will match the truck and the sheet lengths to the site before anything is loaded.
