Wall framing sets the pace for every lining trade that follows. In South East Queensland, steel stud framing has become the default for commercial fitouts and is winning ground in residential work too. Here is how the two options compare for internal walls.
Where steel stud wins
Steel studs are straight, light and consistent. They do not twist, bow or hold moisture, which means flatter walls and fewer callbacks on finishing. Rondo and Knauf Drywall Systems stud and track come in 0.55mm, 0.75mm and 1.2mm gauges with depths from 64mm to 150mm, so there is a profile for partitions, party walls and full height commercial walls.
Where timber still makes sense
Timber suits small renovation patches where you are matching an existing frame, and fixing detail work where chippies want to nail rather than screw. For wet areas, fire walls and acoustic walls, tested systems are usually specified over steel.
What certifiers look for
Fire and acoustic ratings belong to the whole tested assembly: stud, board, fixings and insulation together. If your wall needs an FRL, pair the right gauge of steel with fire-rated plasterboard and follow the manufacturer's system manual rather than mixing components.
