Buying fire-rated board? Bring the system, not just the sheet.

An FRL is a property of the whole assembly, not the board on its own. You will usually need matching steel framing, the correct fixings and screw spacings, jointing compounds, and in many systems acoustic or thermal insulation. Send us the specification and we will quote the full system in one go.

Which fire rated plasterboard is easiest to source in South East Queensland?

13mm and 16mm fire rated plasterboard are the two thicknesses worth specifying if you want it off the shelf. Bayside Plasterboard holds fire rated board across all four South East Queensland yards, so a Brisbane, Redlands, Moreton Bay or Gold Coast site can usually collect the same day rather than wait on a special order.

We supply South East Queensland. We do not deliver to Melbourne, Sydney or interstate sites. If you are building outside our area, source from a distributor in your state so the tested system and the supply chain match.

Does the board on its own give you an FRL?

No. A Fire Resistance Level belongs to a tested system, not to a sheet. The FRL comes from the whole assembly: board type, number of layers, framing type and spacing, insulation, fixing centres and jointing. Swapping any one element voids the tested result, even if the board is identical.

The three numbers in an FRL such as 60/60/60 are minutes for structural adequacy, integrity and insulation in that order. FRL 90/90/90 is the same three criteria held for 90 minutes. Always build to the manufacturer's tested system manual for the system nominated on your drawings, and ask us to supply against that system rather than against a thickness.

Comparing fire rated board specifications

ThicknessApprox. weightTypically appears inNotes
13mm fire ratedapprox. 11 kg/m2Single and double layer systems in residential and light commercial separating wallsThe most commonly specified fire rated thickness
16mm fire ratedapprox. 13 kg/m2Higher rated systems, shafts and commercial separating constructionHeavier to handle, plan the lift
13mm standardapprox. 9 kg/m2General walls and ceilingsNot a substitute in a fire rated system

Weights are typical figures for comparison and planning lifts. The achievable FRL depends entirely on the tested system, so confirm both the weight and the system against the manufacturer's current documentation.

What drives the price of fire rated plasterboard?

Trade pricing moves with thickness, sheet length, the number of layers your system calls for, quantity and whether you collect or we deliver. We do not publish live trade rates because they change with volume and account terms, so the fastest way to a real number is a quote. Send the sheet sizes and quantities and we will price it the same day.

Common Questions

Fire-Rated Plasterboard FAQs

How do I know which FRL I need?

The Fire Resistance Level comes from the NCC based on the building class and the element being protected, and it will be on your architectural or fire-engineering documentation as a three-number figure such as 60/60/60. If it is not clear, your certifier is the right person to confirm it. Once you have it, we can match the board and the system.

Which fire rated plasterboard is easiest to source?

In South East Queensland, 13mm and 16mm fire rated board are the two thicknesses held in stock across our four yards, so most Brisbane, Redlands, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast sites can collect the same day instead of waiting on a special order.

Does fire rated plasterboard on its own achieve an FRL?

No. The Fire Resistance Level belongs to the tested system, not the sheet. Board type, layer count, framing, insulation, fixing centres and jointing all form part of the tested assembly, and changing any one of them voids the result.

What does FRL 60/60/60 mean?

Three criteria held for 60 minutes each: structural adequacy, integrity and insulation, in that order. FRL 90/90/90 is the same three criteria held for 90 minutes. The rating comes from the tested system nominated on your drawings.

Do you deliver fire rated plasterboard interstate?

No. We supply South East Queensland: Brisbane, the Redlands, Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast. For sites in other states, source from a distributor there so the tested system and supply chain match.

Is 13mm or 16mm board better?

Neither is better on its own. The thickness is set by the tested system you are building. Some FRLs are achieved with a single layer of 16mm, others need two layers of 13mm on a particular stud and track arrangement. Substituting one for the other changes the tested assembly and can void the rating.

Can I mix brands within one wall?

No. Fire ratings are tested as complete proprietary systems. Mixing Knauf board into a Knauf system, or vice versa, means you are no longer building a tested assembly. Pick one manufacturer's system and use their board, framing and compounds throughout.

Do you deliver fire-rated board to site?

Yes, across South East Queensland and Northern NSW. Fire-rated sheets are heavier than standard board, so tell us about access, lift requirements and any delivery time window when you order. See delivery and click and collect.
