Ceiling Tiles: Armstrong Fine Fissured, Dune, Ultima, Optra and Bioguard

What size are ceiling tiles?

Most ceiling tiles are 600 x 600mm or 600 x 1200mm and sit in a suspended grid set out at matching centres. Our list also holds 1200 x 1200mm Optra board and plank formats such as 1350 x 450mm. Thickness runs from 10mm to 30mm across the ranges, and tiles are sold by the box.

The grid sets the module. A 600 x 600 grid takes 600 x 600 tiles, and the same grid with every second cross tee left out takes 600 x 1200 tiles. Measure the room, work out the border tiles at each wall, and order whole boxes. Which Armstrong tile suits which room?

Fine Fissured is the everyday tile for offices, corridors and back-of-house rooms. Dune and Ultima are the step-up ranges for reception, retail and meeting rooms. Optra comes in board and tegular edges in white, and in black board. Bioguard is the line for rooms where hygiene matters.

The High NRC and dB lines in the list are the acoustic upgrades: Fine Fissured High NRC and High NRC/CAC, Ultima OP and Ultima dB, and Bioguard Acoustic. They cost more than the standard tile, so they go where the room needs the sound absorption, such as open-plan offices, classrooms and call centres. Where a ceiling also has to block sound travelling between rooms, ask the trade counter, because the ceiling and the walls above it work together.

Black tiles are a feature choice. We hold Optra board in black in a 600 x 1200mm size, and black grid and trims to match.

Board edge or tegular edge?

A board edge tile is flat and sits on top of the grid, so the grid face stays visible. A tegular edge tile has a rebated edge that drops partly below the grid, so the tile edge shows as a shadow line. The number on the tegular tile, 15 or 24, matches the grid face width it is made for.

Tegular 24 suits 24mm grid, Tegular 15 suits the slimmer 15mm exposed grid, and the 15/90 and 24/90 tiles are tegular variants named for their edge detail, which the Armstrong data sheet describes. Bevelled tegular tiles add a chamfer to the edge. The K2C2 edge is for the plank formats. Pick the edge first, because it decides which grid you order. Which tiles reduce noise?

Tiles with a higher NRC absorb more sound inside a room, and tiles with a CAC value also limit sound passing through the ceiling space to the next room. The values are on the Armstrong data sheet for each tile, and we do not quote a figure that is not on one.

Ranges marked High NRC, High NRC/CAC, OP and dB in the table are Armstrong's acoustic lines. What tile goes in a wet or hygiene area?

Bioguard is Armstrong's hygiene-focused range. It is the line to look at for healthcare, food preparation areas and other rooms that are cleaned often, and the RH100 lines carry a humidity designation in the product name. Check the data sheet against the room's specified conditions.

The stock list holds Bioguard Acoustic in 600 x 600 and 600 x 1200 in board, tegular 24 and tegular 15/90 edges, plus the OP RH100 versions. There is also a vinyl faced plasterboard tile, including a black one, for areas that need a wipe-clean surface. Where moisture is constant, such as around a pool, a plasterboard ceiling in moisture resistant plasterboard is the usual alternative to a tile ceiling.

What grid and trims go with the tiles?

Main runners, cross tees and wall angle form the grid. Hangers or rods hold it to the structure, and clips and trims finish the perimeter. The grid has to match the tile edge, so order them together.

What drives the price of ceiling tiles?

Trade pricing is per box and moves with the range, the size, the edge, the acoustic rating and the quantity. A standard Fine Fissured tile costs less per square metre than an Ultima OP dB tile, and the grid is priced per length or per box.
