Rondo Furring Channel and Ceiling Batten
The light-gauge steel section that plasterboard ceilings screw to. Furring channel clips to joists, purlins or a concrete soffit and gives a flat, level plane under any structure; ceiling batten does the same job in timber-framed houses; resilient channel adds acoustic isolation. Roll-formed from 0.50mm BMT galvanised steel in the Rondo Key-Lock system.

What is furring channel?
Furring channel is a light-gauge steel hat-section that fixes to the underside of a structure on clips and gives plasterboard a flat, level plane to screw to. It is the standard framing for direct fix plasterboard ceilings under steel purlins, concrete slabs and timber joists in commercial and multi-residential work, and it also furs out masonry walls for a plasterboard lining.
The Rondo Key-Lock system is the one most Queensland ceiling fixers work with. The 16mm channel (Rondo 308) is the everyday profile, the 28mm channel (129) spans further between clips for wider structure spacings, the 13mm recessed channel suits tighter ceiling depths, and resilient channel decouples the ceiling for acoustic separation between floors.
Furring channel or ceiling batten?
Both carry plasterboard ceilings. Ceiling batten is the lighter section used in timber-framed housing, fixed to the underside of trusses on batten clips at 450mm or 600mm centres. Furring channel is the heavier commercial section fixed on direct fix clips to steel, concrete or timber, with a bigger range of clip and hanger options and longer spans between supports.
Housing in cyclonic regions uses the 24mm cyclonic batten; standard housing uses the 16mm or 35mm batten depending on the truss spacing. If the drawings say furring channel, use furring channel; the clip systems are not interchangeable.
What clips does furring channel need?
A direct fix clip at every support point, matched to the structure: one clip for timber and steel, another for concrete, an acoustic isolation clip where the specification calls for decoupling. Then a joiner at every splice, wall track or J track at the perimeter, and a locking clip where the channel has to be held to the clip.

What drives the price of furring channel?
Trade pricing is per length and moves with the profile, the length, the quantity and the clip count. The channel itself is a small part of a ceiling order; the clips, joiners and track add up on a large room, and the acoustic clips cost several times a standard direct fix clip. What sizes does furring channel come in?
We stock Rondo 16mm furring channel in 2700mm to 6000mm, 28mm in 6000mm, 13mm recessed in 6000mm, the 16 x 38mm concave profile in 4800mm and resilient channel in 3600mm, plus ceiling battens in 16mm, 24mm cyclonic and 35mm. The table above is from our current stock list.
What spacing does furring channel go at?
Typically 450mm or 600mm centres for 10mm and 13mm plasterboard, with clips at the spacing the Rondo design manual gives for the profile and the span. The board manufacturer sets the maximum framing centres for the sheet thickness.
Can furring channel be used on walls?
Yes. It furs out masonry and concrete walls on wall clips so plasterboard can be screwed to a true plane, and it is used behind insulated wall linings. The same profiles apply.
What is resilient channel for?
Acoustic separation. It decouples the ceiling lining from the structure so impact and airborne noise from the floor above is reduced, and it is used with acoustic isolation clips in apartments and townhouses.
What screws fix plasterboard to furring channel?
Fine-thread needle-point plasterboard screws, 25mm for 10mm board and 25mm or 32mm for 13mm board, because the channel is thin 0.50mm steel. See the plasterboard screws page for the selector.
