The self-embedding screw that fixes plasterboard to framing. A bugle head dimples the paper without tearing it, a fine thread grips light-gauge steel and a coarse thread grips timber, and the point is chosen for the steel gauge. Which plasterboard screw do I need?
Coarse thread for timber framing, fine thread for light-gauge steel. Needle point for standard steel stud, batten and furring channel up to about 0.8mm, drill point for heavier steel from about 1.2mm. Length is the board thickness plus bite: 25mm for 10mm board, 32mm for 13mm, 41mm and longer for double layers. Collated for a gun, loose for a hand driver.
The bugle head is the same across all of them. What changes is what the screw has to grip and how thick the board in front of it is. Our guide to which screw, what length and where it goes covers the choices in the order a plasterer makes them.
What length screw for each board?
Into timber allow at least 20mm of thread in the frame; into steel the thread only has to pass fully through the web. That gives 25mm for 10mm board, 32mm for 13mm board on timber, 41mm for 16mm board or a double 10mm layer, 45mm to 51mm for a double 13mm layer, and 65mm and 75mm for insulated or multi-layer systems.

Laminating screws, the 38mm and 50mm coarse bugle heads in 10 gauge, fix the second sheet of a double-layer wall to the first between studs so the outer layer does not sag while the adhesive cures.
Collated or loose?
Collated strips feed an auto-feed screw gun and are the standard for production ceiling and wall fixing, where the depth stop on the gun sets every screw to the same dimple. Loose boxes suit hand driving with a depth-setting attachment, repairs, and the odd lengths a job needs in small numbers. We stock the common lengths both ways.
Whichever form, drive the screw so the head sits just below the paper face without cutting it. A screw driven too deep tears the paper and holds nothing; one left proud shows through every coat of compound.

What drives the price of plasterboard screws?
Trade pricing is per box or per carton of collated strips and moves with length, gauge, finish (zinc yellow or Class 3 for exposed and coastal work), quantity and brand. Collated screws cost a little more per screw than loose and save far more in labour. We do not publish live trade rates because they move with volume and account terms. Send the lengths and quantities and we will price them with the board.

Plasterboard Screws FAQs
What is the difference between fine and coarse thread plasterboard screws?
Fine thread grips thin steel: it gives several turns of engagement in a 0.50mm to 0.75mm stud or furring channel where a coarse thread would strip. Coarse thread grips timber fibre and pulls the sheet up tight in a few turns. Use fine for steel framing and coarse for timber.
Needle point or drill point?
Needle point pierces light-gauge steel up to about 0.8mm under driver pressure and is the standard for wall stud, batten and furring channel. Drill point bores its own hole through heavier steel from about 1.2mm, such as boxed jambs and heavy-duty studs.
What length screw for 13mm plasterboard?
32mm coarse thread into timber, 25mm or 32mm fine thread into light-gauge steel. For a double 13mm layer, 45mm to 51mm.
What are laminating screws?
Longer coarse-thread bugle heads in 10 gauge, 38mm and 50mm, used to fix the second sheet of a double-layer wall to the first sheet between the studs while the adhesive cures. They belong on the order for any fire or acoustic wall with two layers.
Can I use plasterboard screws on Villaboard or fibre cement?
No. Fibre cement takes its own countersunk, ribbed-head fibre cement screw in 20mm or 30mm that seats in the harder sheet. We stock them loose and collated, needle and self drilling.
Do you sell screws by the box or the carton?
Both. Loose screws come by the box, collated strips by the box of strips or by the carton for production work, and bulk trade bags for the common lengths. Tell us the quantity and we will supply the most economical pack.
