Fibre cement sheet is fixed with fibre cement screws or nails, and eaves and expressed-joint work needs the PVC or aluminium jointers and the sealant the manufacturer specifies. We stock the screws and fixings and the battens and framing the sheet hangs on. For tiled wet area walls, the sheet you want is Villaboard, not Hardie Flex.

What is fibre cement sheet used for?
Fibre cement sheet is the flat, weather-resistant sheet used outside the building envelope and in hard-wearing zones inside it: eaves and soffits, verandah and carport ceilings, board-and-batten or expressed-joint cladding, garage and workshop walls, and tile underlays. It is cement, sand and cellulose fibre pressed into a dense sheet, so there is nothing in it to rot, swell or burn.
The everyday product is Hardie Flex. 4.5mm is the eaves sheet, sold as full 1200mm-wide sheets and as narrow eaves strips that line a standard eave in one piece. 6mm is the general cladding and lining thickness. For an internal tiled wet area the correct sheet is Villaboard, which is denser and made for tile.
Which thickness of fibre cement sheet do I need?
4.5mm for eaves, soffits and verandah ceilings where the sheet is supported at close centres and carries no load. 6mm for wall cladding, garage and workshop linings, and anywhere the sheet will be knocked. 9mm architectural panels for commercial facades where the panel is a design feature.
Sheet size follows the framing. A 1200 x 2400mm sheet suits 450mm and 600mm batten centres; 3000mm sheets reduce joints on long eaves and tall walls. The eaves strips at 450mm to 750mm wide are cut to the common eave widths so the sheet goes up without ripping.
How is fibre cement sheet cut and fixed?
Score and snap with a tungsten scoring knife for straight cuts, fibre cement shears or a fibre cement blade with dust extraction for shaped cuts, because the dust contains silica and must be controlled. Fix with fibre cement screws or fibre cement nails at the centres the James Hardie guide gives, keeping fixings back from the sheet edge so the corner does not break.
Joints in eaves and cladding are either expressed with a PVC jointer or flush-set with the manufacturer's jointing system; plasterboard compound is not the product for an external joint. Prime cut edges before painting.

What drives the price of fibre cement sheet?
Trade pricing moves with thickness, sheet size, quantity and delivery. A 4.5mm eaves strip is the cheapest line and a 6mm 3000mm sheet the dearest of the stocked sizes, and architectural panels are priced per job. Fibre Cement Sheet FAQs
Is Hardie Flex the same as fibre cement sheet?
Hardie Flex is the James Hardie general-purpose fibre cement sheet and is what most people mean by fibre cement sheet, fibro or FC sheet. Villaboard, compressed sheet and the cladding ranges are other fibre cement products with different jobs.
What size does fibre cement sheet come in?
The stocked sizes are 1200 x 2400mm and 1200 x 3000mm in 4.5mm and 6mm, plus 4.5mm eaves strips 600mm wide by 2400mm. Other widths and lengths are ordered in. The table above is generated from our current stock list.
Can I use 4.5mm fibre cement sheet for cladding?
It is made for eaves and soffits. Wall cladding should be 6mm or a cladding product such as a weatherboard or panel, because the wall takes knocks that a 4.5mm eave never sees.
Do you cut fibre cement sheet?
We supply full sheets and eaves strips. Cutting on site is quick with a scoring knife, and the strips are sized to common eave widths so most eaves need no ripping at all.
Is fibre cement sheet non-combustible?
James Hardie fibre cement sheets are generally classified non-combustible for the purposes of the NCC. Whether a particular eave or wall detail meets a bushfire or fire-separation requirement depends on the whole construction, so check the specification and the manufacturer documentation for that application.
Do you deliver fibre cement sheet to site?
Yes, across Brisbane, the Redlands, Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast, or collect from any yard. Sheets travel flat on a pallet and should be stacked flat and off the ground on site.
